The (incredible) Farallons at the (amazing) Bluewater Bistro in Bodega Bay, Thursday, May 22, 5-8 pm
We, the American people, do have our hyperboles, don’t we? We overstate, exaggerate, obfuscate, perpetuate, mangilate, and some times even make up words to make a point. Or, we just repurpose words to make something seem more special than it really is. There are many, but two words in particular come to mind, “awesome” and “incredible”. Awesome used to be reserved to describe something that was truly life-changing and struck at the core of the very meaning of life. Sunsets were awesome, Half Dome was awesome, the miracle of life was awesome, the power of (insert your favorite deity) was awesome, the fact that a full moon even existed was awesome. Now, apparently, ice cream is awesome, a pair of shoes is . . . awesome, sushi is . . . awesome, and Justin Bieber is . . . awesome. As for incredible – intuiting the general theory of relativity was incredible, people walking on the moon was incredible, discovering antibiotics was incredible, writing Don Quixote was incredible, a 398,000 pound machine travelling at 40,000 feet above sea level was incredible. Now, showing up to work on time five days in a row is incredible, good cake is . . . incredible, providing health care for everyone is . . . incredible, the perfect martini is . . . incredible. Have we lowered the bar? Let the standard slide? Allowed mediocrity to call the shots? Next Thursday, May 22 you can take a stand against bar lowering, standard sliding and not mediocrity shot calling by simply showing up at the Bluewater Bistro in Bodega Bay to eat some incredible food and drink awesome martinis while listening to the awesome Farallons play their incredible music. You might even catch a sunset. (Tom Richardson is solely responsible for this text).
